I have recently come into a WWII panoramic photograph of the entire unit: Company I, 3rd Bn. 23rd Marines, 4th MARDIV at Camp Pendelton, CA dated 12/19/1943. This photo is unique in that it has listed on the reverse side all names of the Marines in the photo.. I have made some copies of the side showing the Marines. If you have an interest, let me know and I'll mail a copy to you. Perhaps there's someone you know?

comments: I left MCRD PI in 1976 as a recruit and returned again as a drill Instructor in 1989 serving with B Co. 1st Bn. What is so ironic is that I served in the same Squadbays that I was a recruit in. Last month was the first time in over 20 years that I broke the lock from my old
footlocker and opened up some things that I had saved. I didn't even realize what the contents were until I seen my campaign cover, Black Belt, Red flags, Yellow flags, BWT flags etc... I even had shoe polish, Brasso and a small jug of Aqua Velva with alcohol and cotton balls in it. I have lost some of my long term memory but just seeing these things has brought back a few.

My husband MGySgt Stephen Kmiecik USMC Retired and I have attended reunions in the past and none of them could compare to the reunion planned by the Millers. In fact I was not anxious to attend this one as the past ones had been such a boring event. You may look forward to our attending next year, the picnic was great (but please try to reduce the wind next year). I especially enjoyed doing the tour of the 4th Battalion and our guide was a terrific young woman. Everything about the reunion was great even the hotel at such a special price. If some former drill instructors are reading this my husband would like to see Smedly, Billoti, Bledsoe & Bolling excuse spelling of names so I hope these former drill instructors will attend next year.

Sgt. Maj. Miller,
We BOTH had a great time at the reunion this year!! Everything was well done and very organized. Hats off to you Millers!!! The only thing we would change would be to not have the reunion on Mothers Day weekend. Probably there were many reasons why it had to be scheduled at that time. We would come again even if it was on Mothers Day weekend again!! The guys have such a great time and wives enjoy seeing each other again, too.

Sgt. Maj. Miller,
The 2011 reunion was outstanding. This was our second reunion. My wife and I attend as the guest of my Sr. Drill Instructor R.F. Sandmeyer. This will be an annual event for us becuase we have such a good time and meet so many new friends. I must also compliment the organization of the banquet this year. You got everyone fed and happy
in record time! We look forward to next year's reunion already, and to many more after that. In closing I want to say thanks to you and your organization for making the reunion such a memorable occasion. In these uncertain times it is always good to return to Parris Island to see that our beloved Corps is in good hands for many years to come.

Ken and Mary:
Thank you for a wonderful 2011 reunion. You and the association are doing an unbelievable job, year after year, and it gets better and more memorable each time.
In reviewing my status of membership, I realized, I'm delinquent since April of last year.
I sincerely apologize for this, but have an explanation for this as follows:
Having learned so much over my lifetime, the part of my brain which stores memory is completely full, and it seems that whenever I need to learn something new, I need to forget something to make room for the new information. I suspect, I must have removed my obligation for membership renewal from memory, hence the delinquency.
If you buy this, I would like to talk to you about some property I have for sale!
I have mailed you a check for $50.00 for year 2010 (delinquent) and 2011 (current) membership.

Again, thanks for a great time and God Bless,
Sincerely yours,
William (Bill) Hohnhorst, Jr.

Dear Ken & Mary:
Just a few words to thank you, and congratulate you, on another fine reunion. You certainly out-did yourselves in making this another successful reunion.
I am quite aware of the time and dedication you both put into this. The association has certainly grown over the years and this is a reflection of your hard work.
I was pleasantly surprised when at the meeting, Mary stated that our account has blossomed to $16,000.
I look forward to next years 25th anniversary, and as discussed, it will be a great reunion if indeed Sgt.Maj. Kent is available to be our guest.
Wishing you continued success in all your endeavors, and thanks again for all you do for the association.
Best regards; and semper fidelis:

We have now lost another one of our brother Drill Instructors. To meet and know Chuck Taliano was one of my greatest experiences. Sgt T was not only an outstanding Drill Instructor, he was one hell of a Marine. He will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate to meet him and to those who were honored to serve with him. I am so proud to call him my friend. And I speak for all the Drill Instructors from both Parris Island and San Diego.

Chuck, I know you are in Heaven, because you have already been to Hell. I will miss you, my friend. I am so happy I got to see you at the Parris Island Reunion. No more pain, you are back to FirstClass on your PFT.

My wife Miss Jean and I sincerely enjoyed being a part of this past re-union. I had graduated from D.I. School July 16, 1956 in the first of the 250 man classes after McKeon took his platoon to Ribbon Creek. A terrible time in our Marine Corps history as we all know. However, with the grace of God and the leadership of our Marine Corps we have overcome that terrible experience. It's the devotion of our drill instructors that lights the fire in these young men and women to stand proud and carry out the tradition of our corps.

Thanks for having my wife and I at this past re-union.

Good luck to the Officers and Board Members that was recently appointed to a successful 2010. We all know that Mary will keep everyone in line.

One suggestion if I may?
Consider adding the calendar years that were spent on the grinder to the name tags. Even though we look in the mirror and think I haven't changed a bit, we have. That's why, we can't find anyone we knew back in 1956. Ha
Again thanks for a unforgettable 2010 re-union.

Semper Fidelis

I recently had the opportunity to conduct Customs operations training for the 2d MAW at Beaufort Air Station, have not returned to Beaufort, since graduating MCRD on 5 Dec 72, plt 297. Have been trying to see if my Senior Drill Instructor is still around, then SSG George Mikesell, and my other nemesis who ended up as a Junior DI and ensured he added to my Parris Island Experience, then SGT James LaCurssi. Believe he was also a 2d Bn DI.

If there is any way you could assist with helping me get in touch of the I would greatly appreciate the assist. After 39 years of military service, and now a Col in the Army, the memories are still fresh, and would like to reach out, because the Corp ideals I received at MCRD have been my guiding light throughout my career.
